The writer doesn't realize that he/she won't get back the full amount donated, even if it is only $100 total.. Emily donated $655 or so worth of clothes to Salvation Army, stuff she was never gonna wear, and when I did her taxes, she only got back 10% of that, I think. Who cares if it helps her out by making her school more prestigious. Seems like he/she needs a job now, not a "prestigious" diploma.
