Hey Jim, i wouldnt' read below if you haven't seen the Dark Knight Rises and want to:

Bruce Wayne does not die at the end of the movie<http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_batman_die_in_the_dark_knight_rises#> he somehow survives the explosion, and that is seen when Alfred sees Wayne and Selina kyle in a restaurant, Bruce did this purposely to let Alfred see what he wanted to see, Bruce Wayne himself survives, but the cape and cowl are put up permanently so Batman does in a way "die" without losing his life

Here's the problem that I have with this statement: Alfred explicitly stated that he had dreams of seeing Bruce Wayne in Italy sitting at a cafe and they would look at each other but wouldn't say anything. (If it wasn't dreams, it was thoughts.. something that wasn't real.) So at the end of the movie, it wasn't real. That's the way that I took it.

Also, as the Bat Plane thing was flying out over the ocean, there's only 5 seconds left on the bomb. This could just be an editing trick to fool the viewer, maybe there was autopilot, who knows. In the Comic Book with the same name of the movie, Bruce Wayne fakes his own death to kill off Batman and then he trains future heroes to protect Gotham City. That's probably what Nolan was doing with this film, but still - There's no way he escaped that bat plane if he was in it with the bomb. I didn't see the Bat Plane (I know it's called the "Bat" but that's a silly name) take off with the bomb, so I can't attest as to whether he was in it or not. Silly film editing to produce the desired ambiguous effect.
