aPlan for New Training and Educational Opportunities

Purpose for Writing—To create a new plan for providing health care staff with educational opportunities, training requirements, and symposiums that are available/mandatory to successfully provide health care to our customers. As of right now, training sessions and symposiums are posted on a specific website. Most extracurricular training sessions and all symposiums require payments prior to attending with no refund/payments by the hospital. A new plan should provide more opportunities for nurses to attend educational and training sessions more regularly by receiving information that is more easily accessed, reimbursements and payments in some cases to attend mandatory and specific essential yet non-required training sessions, and other perks that would allow health care staff to more frequently receive training. Since many staff members live outside of the city and must travel by personal vehicle to work, this also requires them to pay for parking that the hospital provides at cost, and it requires that they take up valuable personal time to attend mandatory training sessions with no monetary reimbursement.

2.  Audience—The primary consumers of this report will be the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital health care staff. However, it will also need to address the management team of the hospital.

3.  Goals of Information—I will have several broad categories of information that will allow me to accomplish my goals:

a)   The first goal is to read the official policies that discuss what is required to work in specific units in the hospital by nurses in order to find out about the minimum requirements.

b)   The second goal is to find out about the educational opportunities that are provided by the hospital staff and outside researchers.

c) The third goal is to find out what could be changed about our educational and training courses that could provide our staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to complete their duties.

d)A fourth goal includes finding out how staff can be reimbursed for their time spent in the training classes.

e) Finally, I would need to understand what could be incorporated into the current plan that would fall in line with current policies and that would provide better opportunities for staff to receive training and education outside of work.

  4.  Information Objectives—After I have collected the information, I will analyze it which should help find a flaw in the current system.

a)There are current policies that are not be properly used by our hospital in all or specific cases. If this does occur, I will need to address this issue with current management and appropriate staff in order to remedy it.

            b) There are official policies that hinder the ability for current staff to receive educational opportunities. If this occurs, I will need to propose a change in the policy, a new policy, or changing something in the hospital that would allow the policy to be effective.

5.  Methodology—I must collect information related to standards of health care education, information on current practices related to this education and trainin, and the capabilities of the hospital, administration, staff, and speakers to provide more appropriate opportunities for health care staff.

a) Information on standards can be found in nursing books, journal articles, and other hospital standards related to education.

b) Information related to the capabilities of the organizations/people to provide opportunities for educational opportunities can be found in the employee benefits manual, the UPMC website, and the UPMC weekly newsletter.the available rooms for training seminars, and the types of research and practices that should be provided for the staff members.

7.  Information Verification—I will verify my information through peer-review journals and nursing books on standards related to nurse training.

  8.  Schedule of Milestones— the following tasks should be completed by the following dates:

Draft formal proposal memo: November 19, 2012

Identify all relevant documents: November 20, 2012

Identify personnel to interview: November 21, 2012

Submit Formal proposal memo: November 25, 2012
